Pants & Shorts Sizing: Translating Asian Sizes

Pants and shorts are where most first-time oopbuy buyers make their biggest sizing mistakes. Unlike tops, which can look intentionally oversized, ill-fitting pants are immediately obvious and impossible to style around. Learning to translate Asian size charts into your perfect fit is a skill that pays dividends on every future order.

Start by measuring your best-fitting pair of pants. Lay them flat and measure: waist width across the top band, hip width at the widest point, thigh width 10 centimeters below the crotch, inseam from crotch to hem, and total outseam from waist to hem. Record these in centimeters. Do the same for shorts, but stop the inseam measurement at the hem line.

When reading an Asian size chart, compare every measurement, not just the waist. Many buyers focus only on the waistband number and end up with pants that fit at the waist but are too tight in the thighs or too short in the inseam. Asian pants often have slimmer leg tapers than Western cuts, so the thigh measurement is especially critical if you have athletic legs.

Jeans and denim require extra attention because raw denim does not stretch like stretch-cotton blends. If the size chart shows a 32-inch waist, that is the actual measurement of the garment, not your body measurement. For a comfortable fit, your body waist measurement should be 2 to 3 centimeters smaller than the garment waist. For a tight fit, match them exactly and expect some break-in.

Cargo pants and technical trousers often include an elastic waistband or drawstring. These are more forgiving because the waist can adjust, but the inseam and thigh measurements are still fixed. Always check the rise measurement too: a low-rise cut will sit on your hips, while a high-rise cut sits at your natural waist, dramatically affecting where the pants feel comfortable.

For shorts, consider the context of wear. Streetwear shorts are often designed to hit above the knee. If you prefer a longer, near-knee look, add 3 to 5 centimeters to your target inseam.
